Martins Play Best Game Of Season To Win At Washington Rams Back On Top With Three In Row Billy Peele Hurls Three-Hitter and Davenport Hits - ♦ - ■ Karin Lift* Turns In Top Score Of Season In De feating; Janiesville -—« There were about as many changes in the standings in the Martin County League today as in any period since the league open ed, all of it coming from a flurry of activity that had been building up while the rains held sway in this section. One of the most surprising of the surprising happenings was the way the Williamston Martins came out of an apparent deep sleep to play their best game of the year in defeating Washing ton’s Bees 12 to 0. Billy Peele had one of his best assortments of stuff on the mound and he got bang-up support from his mates ST WDINGS MARTIN COUNTY LEAGUE (Games reported to June 8) \V. L. Pet. And added to that was the return of Joe Davenport to his hitting stride. A power man at the plate several years ago Joe had been unable to get his hits regularly or at op portune times but he came through last night with a homer, a triple and a single in six times up for a .500 percentage. Hay wood Wynne also hit the ball on the nose for four hits in six at tempts racking up a double and Ir: m iw m [«] u MANY THANKS ll will In* it pleasure lu serve the people, ami I a-suir all 1*11 la* at their serviee lo llie liesj of inv abililv. Robersonville's Rums went to the top of the heap as Williamston was moving off the bottom. The Rams showed great staying power as they came through after being behind and won two of their three straight victories in then last turns at bat. They defeated Bear Grass in the 10th Tuesday night and won in the 9th over Everetts yesterday afternoon. In a less balanced game last night the Rams again defeated the Cubs. 9-2. In a game reported to have been played partly under protest,, Oak City's Roosters knocked Bear Grass out of first place, 13 to 9. on Wednesday afternoon. Farm Life set a new scoring re cord when they caught Jamesville for a 28 to 3 decision Wednesday afternoon. No details were avail able early today on any of the Wednesday games except the Wil liamston-Washington affair. No games are to be played in the league until Saturday night when Bear Grass plays at Wash ington and Everetts and Oak City play at Williamston. Everybody gets back to business Sunday afternoon unless weather interferes. Lack of reserve strength is giv ing some of the teams trouble at ' times and makes for an occasional ! one-sided game but when things are in even fair shape for the loop teams about as fast a brand of ball is being played in this league now as some of the semi-pro loops in , this sect ion. -— ROBERSON V IEEE fi BEAR GRASS 5 The Robersonville Rams, after a shaky start that enabled the Bears to score five unearned i runs, settled down to score a 0-5 victory over First Place Bear ! Grass in a 10-inning thriller Tues , day night. Scott kept the Rams in the running as he scored the first two runs, and managed to reach I base four times. He got a double, I two singles and a base on balls in five appearances. Wynne started on the mound -for the Bears and had a comfort able lead until the 7th when the ; Rams tallied twice on three sin gles and an out field fly. Guy Forbes led off with a single. Calvin Warren drew a base on balls when Willi ford tried to keep his pitches high to prevent a bunt. Wobbleton took over thi’ mound dunes at this point but he eouldn't get his fast ball by Scott, who laid down a perfect bunt and heat it out ui load the bases.
